Flutter or React Native in 2026: how to choose for your app

Both frameworks let one team ship an iOS and an Android app from one codebase. We build with both, for example a manager app in React Native and an events app in Flutter, and the right choice depends more on your situation than on benchmarks.

Flutter in one paragraph

Flutter, from Google, draws its own UI with the Dart language. Interfaces look identical on every device, animations are smooth, and you are not dependent on native components looking the same across platforms.

React Native in one paragraph

React Native, from Meta, uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders real native components. If you already have a React web app or a JavaScript team, a lot of knowledge and sometimes code carries over.

Choose Flutter when

  • Design is custom and must look the same on iOS and Android
  • The app is UI-heavy with lots of animation
  • You are starting a mobile team from scratch

Choose React Native when

  • You already run a React or Next.js web product
  • Your team writes TypeScript
  • You want to share logic and types between web and mobile

What matters more than the framework

A clean backend API, a realistic MVP scope, release automation for the App Store and Google Play, and crash reporting decide whether an app succeeds. The framework is rarely the bottleneck.

FAQ

Is Flutter faster than React Native?
For most business apps both are fast enough. Flutter has an edge in heavy custom animation; React Native's new architecture closed much of the gap. Choose by team and product, not by benchmarks.
Can one team build iOS and Android at once?
Yes. Both Flutter and React Native compile one codebase to iOS and Android apps.
Which is better for a startup MVP?
The one your team knows. If you have React web developers, React Native; if you start fresh with a design-heavy app, Flutter.
